From the Office of the State Auditor (OSA):
"The Office of the State Auditor investigates allegations of improper governmental conduct by state agencies or state employees within our statutory authority..."
How does it know where to look? One way is through its Tip Line. Using email, voice, web form, or US Mail, the OSA collects input from concerned citizens and government employees. This process works if we use it!
Reports can remain anonymous, and in all cases identities of the tipsters remain privileged information.
Rocky Mount case study
After receiving more than 200 tips on its hot line, the Office of the State Auditor investigated allegations of abuse in the City of Rocky Mount. The investigation brought questionable practices into the open.
It appeared that the city was preventing over $40 K in collections from a council member, and tens of thousands of dollars more in contracts were improperly awarded. The OSA brought facts to light and pushed stonewalling public officials into responding to the complaints. Here is what the State Auditor report looked like.
